Meetings
The club invites prominent guest or expert for an off-the-record meeting every month. Since the NAFCC’s first meeting in January 2014, guests have included François Gouyette, the French ambassador to Tunisia, Hamadi Jebali, former Tunisian prime minister, and Wided Bouchamaoui, president of the Tunisian Union for Industry, Commerce and Handicrafts (UTICA).
Trainings
The NAFCC also organises training for its members that includes: first aid, cybersecurity, and security training.

À Tunis, le 19 janvier 2024L’association des correspondants étrangers en Afrique du nord (NAFCC) tient à exprimer son inquiétude après la multiplication des poursuites judiciaires enclenchées à l’encontre de nos confrères journalistes de la presse tunisienne.
Le dernier dossier en date concerne Haythem El Mekki, journaliste reconnu qui a été l’un des symboles de la liberté de presse. Pour avoir évoqué sur les réseaux sociaux la situation de l’hôpital de Sfax qui a, cet été, été dépassé par le nombre de cadavres de migrants arrivant dans l’établissement, notre confrère risque aujourd’hui des poursuites judiciaires rendues possibles par l’adoption du décret 54 qui punit de lourdes peines la diffusion de dites fausses informations.
Quelques jours seulement avant la convocation de Haythem El Mekki, c’est Zied El Heni – journaliste à la radio IFM – qui a été arrêté et a passé une dizaine de jours en prison pour une chronique critique envers la ministre du Commerce tunisienne.
A l’heure où nous écrivons ces lignes, notre confrère Khalifa Guesmi, journaliste de la radio Mosaïque FM, est incarcéré – pour une durée de cinq ans – pour avoir refusé de dévoiler ses sources dans une affaire de démantèlement d’une cellule terroriste. Depuis le 25 juillet 2021, le nombre de journalistes poursuivis ou harcelés dans des affaires liées au travail dépasse les 20.
Alors que la Tunisie s’achemine cette année vers un scrutin présidentiel, ces procès à répétition sont de mauvais augure.
Nous tenons, par ce communiqué, à assurer à nos confrères tunisiens de notre pleine considération et solidarité et à réaffirmer l’impérieuse nécessité de garantir une presse libre dans ce pays à l’origine des révolutions arabes.

Statement- Access to the presidential Palace
The foreign media correspondents based in Tunis regret to have been sidelined during the recent official meetings held by the Tunisian presidency.
In December, when Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan was visiting the country, foreign correspondents were not given access to the palace to attend the press conference, as highlighted by Reporters Without Borders. Tunisian journalists also encountered difficulties, according to the national union for journalists, the SNJT. No journalists were present for the statement by the French minister of foreign affairs during his visit to Tunis on January 9.
We underline the necessity for journalists to attend events in person in order to provide coverage: official images are not a sufficient stand-in for on the ground journalism.
We understand that there are security constraints and it is for this reason that we are accredited by the Tunisian authorities.
We are ready to organise between ourselves when circumstances require, to ensure coverage despite time constraints or logistical challenges during certain visits.
We know that we can count on the good will of the presidency’s communications services and we support all of their initiatives to allow the media to fulfil their role as observers of democratic life. We hope that the doors of Carthage will remain open and that the presidency will welcome our independent and diverse coverage of its activities.

Open letter to Libyan Prime Minister Fayez al Sarraj
The NAFCC supports RSF and the LCFP in their open letter to the head of the libyan National Union Government.
“Reporters Without Borders (RSF) and the Libyan Centre for Freedom of Press (LCFP) urge Libyan Prime Minister Fayez al Sarraj to intervene immediately to rescind all measures obstructing the work of international journalists and the Libyan correspondents of foreign media outlets.”
