It is with immense sadness and profound pain that we have learned about the loss of our colleague, Yasmine Ryan.
Yasmine was based in Istanbul since 2016 after living several years in Tunisia, where, with great sensitivity and professionalism she covered the country’s democratic transition post 2011. She received her degrees from the Institut d’études politiques (IEP) in Aix-en-provence and the University of Auckland in New Zealand. She began her career as a freelance journalist, leading her to notable collaborations with Al Jazeera English, The Independent, Sunday Times, BBC, CNN, and CCTV. In Istanbul, she worked for TRT (Tukey Radio Television). In 2014 Yasmine co-founded the North African Foreign Correspondents Club (NAFCC), where she was a member of the board. Her warm, collaborative attitude earned her the respect and friendship not just of her fellow journalists in Tunisia, but also in Algeria, Morocco and Libya, and among researchers whom she helped so generously, and many others she encountered in the course of her work.
We express our deepest condolences to Yasmine’s family. We salute Yasmine’s memory, her rigorous professionalism, her great sensitivity, and her attachment to the values of liberty and justice. Yasmine remains in our hearts and thoughts.
